Aang had Katara and Sokka, while Korra had Mako and Bolin. Also similarly, there seems to always be one non-bender in the main quad of friends. WebAsami was just a good friend. Not the greatest relationship of all time, but probably the best one in Avatar just for the sheer dramaless effort put into it. Its not cheesy or kiddy like Kataang, which is probably the runner-up. The simplicity of it just feels natural, like it could happen to anyone. I think that's why its so well received.
